For the first time in Alappuzha District, a plastic waste processing unit is going to be opened in Muthukulam. Plan has been made by Muthukalam Block Panchayat . The Block Panchayat president Shri. Bipin C Sabu informed that, the unit will be similar to that of the modern processing plant working in Kannur.
The Block Panchayat plans to implement the project with the cooperation of 8 other Grama Panchayat within in its jurisdiction. Cheppad, Arattupuzha, Chingoli, Muthukulam, Kandalloor, Pathiyoor, Devikulangara and Krishnapuram Panchayats will be a part of the project.
Plastic wastes will be collected from each Panchayat , in a process lasting for about 45 days. 8 lady labors will be appointed for the process with a payscale and incentive matching The National Rural Employment Generation Scheme (NREGS). Those who collect more than 1 kg of plastic waste are eligible for incentive. The wastes will be collected from 7 am to 1 pm everyday.
The estimated cost for the project is 48 lakhs, in which Block Panchayat will 32 lakhs, and 2 lakhs from the other 8 Grama Pachayats. Apart from that Rs.20 will be collected from every house in the area, which will be used to cover labor and transportation costs.
