Although Vishu is the astrological new year day of Kerala, the official Malayalam new year falls on the first month of Chingam (August – September). Chingam is the harvest season in Kerala. The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani, Which is the first sight to see in the morning after waking up. The Vishukkani consist of an arrangement of articles like raw rice, golden cucumber, fresh lemon, mirror, betel leaves, arecanut, konna flower (Cassia fistula), Metal vessel named Uruli, coins and a holy text. Metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed aside the arrangement. This arrangement is done in the night before Vishu.
